The company known today as Victorinox was founded in 1884 by Karl Elsener and it was originally a cutlery factory named Victoria, in honor to Elsener's mother. The company name was updated to Victorinox in 1921, and is the resulting combination of the former title with the word "inox", an abbreviation of the French phrase "acier inoxydable" meaning stainless steel. Worldwide famous for being the creators of the Original Swiss Army Knife, the brand gained fame after world war II when American soldiers returned home with the multiuse tools as souvenirs.Through the years Victorinox evolved from its foundations in the manufacture of folding knives to incorporate watchmaking in 1989. The wristwatches were first available in the United States and were initially designed after traditional military timepieces featuring waterproof dials, nylon bands and composite cases. Every Victorinox Swiss Army precision timepiece is designed and developed following the same principles embodied in the legendary pocket tool: quality, reliability, functionality, innnovation and iconic design.
